98 WOMEN OF QUESTIONABLE VIRTUE

Although the photographs in this book are from the 1890s through the 1920s, the quotes underneath are from more contemporary people. Whether serious, light-hearted, interesting, profound or thought-provoking, the statements represent opinions and observations about prostitutes and prostitution. The photos were used for several purposes. First, some were used to produce three-dimensional stereo-views. Second, some were used to make French Postcards, risqué cards sold from under the counter in shops. Third, a portion of the photos were bought by men collecting risqué photographs of women in various stages of undress. Finally, some of the pictures were probably used as advertising by the women. The idea was that a man possessing the photograph would think of the lady pictured the next time he wanted to have a good time. This book is limited to 825 signed and numbered copies.

The author has collected these photographs since 1993. They come from a variety of sources. Some of the images are in good condition while others have deteriorated. Along with each photograph is a statement about prostitutes or prostitution. This book is limited to 550 signed and numbered copies.

FIFTY YEARS OF PROSTITUTE PHOTOS 1870-1920, Volume I

This collection of photos covers a 50-year span of prostitution. Early photos of prostitutes are not readily available. Many of the women did not want publicity about their role in the profession; hence few photographs of them survive. Another group of prostitutes were not camera shy and gave photos to customers. Other women had their photos taken during recreational outings. Some were photographed during their police booking. All are represented in this book. Some of the women are in various stages of undress.

INDECENT EXPOSURE: EROTIC PROSTITUTES ON STEREOVIEW CARDS 1850s–1920s

Stereocards consist of a pair of separate images, depicting left eye and right eye views of the same object, place or person. They are viewed using a stereoscope, an instrument that transforms a stereoscopic pair of separate images into a single three-dimensional image. The demand for stereo viewers exploded between 1850 and 1900.  Prostitutes became subjects for stereocards beginning in the 1850s. This book reviews a brief history of the stereoscope, how it operates, and characteristics of the cards depicted, which portray a wide selection of prostitutes in various stages of dress, from fully dressed to fully undressed. By 1900, there were millions and millions of stereocards spread across the world. In many places they were smuggled into a country and sold underground. This book allows the reader a look back at the media craze of a previous century.

PHOTOGRAPHS OF RED LIGHT LADIES 1865-1920

This book contains a large collection of amateur and professional photographs of prostitutes who worked in the trade from 1865 to 1920. They were all prostitutes who sold sex for money. These photographs vary in quality. Accompanying each picture is a statement about prostitution or the prostitutes who engaged in the world’s oldest profession.  This book is limited to 375 signed and numbered copies.
